At least ten Buddhist temples were destroyed last weekend in Bangladesh after violent attacks on the minority. Fourteen homes belonging to Buddhist families were also destroyed.
In response, a two-judge panel of the Bangladeshi High Court has asked the Government of that country why it failed to provide necessary security for the minority, and has requested that it be provided, to prevent additional violence in the Muslim-majority state.
The violence occurred in the area of Cox’s Bazaar, a fishing port about 75 kilometers from Burma. Media reports suggest that the Buddhist properties and religious sites were attacked in response to an image of a burned Koran that was posted on Facebook.
Buddhists in Thailand have called on the United Nations to prevent further violence against the minority Bangladeshi Buddhists.
